Pitching is a game of focus and execution …

Pitching …

Pitching is often coached backwards and as a result, frequently coached incorrectly. What I mean by that is, that coaches who don’t specialize in pitching will ask a young athlete to warm up on their own and then join them once they are ready to pitch on a mound to a catcher. It’s at this point that coaches will often start picking apart their mechanics and trying to suggest some tips and tricks.

Experienced pitchers and coaches know that pitching starts long before you ever step onto a mound. Something as simple as selecting the right throwing partner can influence your success and development. I always encourage athletes to choose a specific goal for their game of catch and to focus on every throw. Trying to execute each throw is a crucial component to become a better pitcher and helps transfer into games and stressful situations. As a pitcher there are so many layers to success. If you desire to be an elite level pitcher, you need to work on your preparation and your routine. You need to find out what works for you and then learn to repeat that and eventually improve upon it.

All successful pitchers are capable of great games of catch. They go hand in hand. Playing catch is where good pitchers become great.
